The Direct expansion system enables the design of the most compact refrigerant system. The direct expansion system eliminates the use of secondary coolant loops and uses refrigerant direct cooling to obtain the required payload through the cold plate. The customized cold plate is operating at a temperature well below ambient with high heat flux. The refrigerant undergoes an isothermal phase change in the direct expansion system of the cold plate which provides very strict temperature control.
A direct expansion system consists of a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The evaporator absorbs heat directly from the payload. The minimal parts are used due to the secondary coolant is removed. There are no fans to circulate cold air, and no pumps to circulate coolant. Removed these parts to increase efficiency and reduce complexity. A secondary coolant (air or liquid) indicates additional thermal resistance, which adds heat to the system and reduces the net cooling capacity. The figure below shows the details of the direct expansion system vapor compression refrigeration cycle.
A Direct Expansion system using Coolingstyle's temperature control system offers the most precision, +/- 0.1ºC. Direct expansion cold plates can be found in many applications. For example, active thermal management of industrial, medical, and scientific lasers where the cold plate is mounted directly on the laser module. Two options of miniature compressor technology(Aspen & Domestic) which depend on the client's requirement.
